Where did you attend school & what was your major?
After graduating from high school in 1987, I attended Suffolk County Community College in Seldon, New York for two years. There I studied Broadcasting/Telecommunications and learned to produce and direct television. I also worked at a local cable station as a production assistant. After my second year of college I decided to become a teacher instead and attended David Lipscomb University. I graduated from D.L.U. in 1994 with a B.S. in Elementary Education.
How long have you been at Eakin?
The 2006-07 school year is my eighth year teaching at Eakin. I originally taught fifth grade during my first two years here, and I am starting my sixth year as a fourth grade teacher.
Do you have previous teaching experience?
Before coming to Eakin, I taught at Head Middle school for four years as both a fifth and sixth grade teacher. My very first year teaching was also in a portable classroom at Whitsitt Elementary where I had a fifth grade class.
What led you to teaching?
My bosses at the cable station were not making any money, so I decided to go into teaching so that I could (lol). Actually, Broadcasting involved skill and little heart. Teaching involves mostly heart with a fair amount of skill, a combination I enjoy. Changing my major to teaching meant following a dream I had since I was very young. I wanted to make a difference for others just as my teachers made a difference for me.
What is your favorite part of teaching and interacting with children? Do you have any special interests or what is your favorite part of the school year?
I really enjoy getting animated and helping my students make connections in learning. I get excited when they do not know something because that means they are going to learn. I particularly enjoy those moments when the "light bulb" goes on and I can see understanding in the eyes of my students.
What is your preferred method of communication?
