President's Message
August 2007
Dear Eakin Families
On behalf of the Eakin Parent Teacher Organization, I would like to welcome you to the new school year. After a year of transition,
we are excited to spend our first full year in the new, award winning building. In May, judges from The Metropolitan Historical
Commission gave a Preservation Award to Eakin Elementary School for its sensitive renovation of a historic school.
We are fortunate to have such a wonderful facility.
Eakin has become an outstanding school because of the cooperation of everyone involved in providing the best education possible
for its students. With the help and support of all our parent volunteers, our goals are made possible.
As a parent/guardian, you are automatically a part of our PTO. A PTO is different than a PTA. We do not have any dues that must
be collected and submitted to a national group. All funds earned by our programs stay right here at Eakin. The purpose of the
PTO is to support and enhance the educational opportunities provided at Eakin School through volunteer and fundraising activities.
In 2006-7, the PTO provided $8,300 to teachers to buy supplies for their classrooms, over $9,000 for teacher development, $5,700 for
Art department supplies, and $1,000 to the P.E. department for Field Day. We need your help to continue funding these and future needs
of the school.
Invest in Your Child (IIYC) is the PTO's biggest fundraising program where we ask parents to contribute money directly to the PTO.
We have found this to be more effective than having our students selling products such as wrapping paper or cookie dough.
We believe that given today's budgetary pressures on Metro Public Schools, this is the best way for us to help Eakin be the best it can be.
All contributions made to the PTO are tax deductible. We ask that all parents/guardians contribute to this program.
All contributions to this program go to specific projects and not to general PTO funds. Last year, IIYC raised approximately $42,000
to fund a technology lab and science lab. This year, Eakin will have a full time Technology teacher and each child will take a class
that utilizes the new lab. The popular science lab will continue to be utilized for programs throughout the school year, after school camps,
and summer camps. Thank you to all of you who supported these projects. This year, IIYC will focus its attention on raising money for
professional development for the staff and improving the landscaping in and around Eakin. In order for our children to have the best
education possible, we believe it is extremely important for all families to contribute. Please consider a contribution of $200 per
student for the school year. If you are able to give more, please do since many of our families cannot give at the $200 level.
If you cannot give at a $200 level, please give at any amount you can. We are striving for 100% participation.
PTO meetings are typically held the 2nd Thursday of each month. Last year, several of the PTO meetings focused on specific topics of
interest which were very successful and generated much interest. Some of the topics included TCAPs, PBS (positive behavior system),
and Literacy. Should you have any suggestions for topics of interest to cover this year, please email mcgrawlee@comcast.net or call
the school. All PTO meetings cover information that is pertinent to your child's education and attendance is highly encouraged.
One thing that makes Eakin so successful is the enthusiastic involvement of parents in the life of the school.
Your participation as a volunteer will help ensure that success in the year ahead. Please review the list of volunteer activities
and see where you might want to help out. This is a great way to meet other parents and learn more about what goes on at Eakin.
Again, we welcome you to the Eakin community and look forward to seeing you at the meetings and around the school.
Sincerely,
Amy Lee
PTO President
