Our
Vision
"At Eakin we will build on our strengths of diversity, community
involvement, and excellence in reading and the arts and we identify and improve upon
our weaknesses to create a challenging learning environment for our children."
The Vision statement purpose is to show the path forward for Eakin.
Here we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate our strengths; the qualities that
make Eakin special and give it its current reputation and atmosphere, and yet
recognize that we have areas in which we would like to see improvement.
We want to maintain our strengths, and work on some new areas, such as
science, foreign language, and challenging and meeting the needs of all of our
children, including our large gifted population, and improved
fundraising for the many programs we would like to see implemented in the next few
years. The word challenging was chosen because of this meaning: "the quality
of requiring full use of one's abilities, energy, or resources." American
Heritage Dictionary.
Our
Mission
"At Eakin we nurture each child's intellectual, creative, emotional, and
social development within a safe and challenging environment."
By using each, the statement is meant to show that Eakin students'
individual
learning styles, strengths, levels of achievement, and uniqueness are
appreciated and considered. Intellectual was placed first to emphasize
that
most people in our community believe that working on academics and love
of
learning should be Eakin's first priority. Intellectual was preferred
to
academic because it means the ability to learn and reason; capacity for
knowledge and understanding. Whereas the definition of academic had
several
pejorative meanings such as scholarly to the point of being unaware of
the
outside world, formalistic, and conventional
